Kenny Drew with Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Sam Jones & Louis Hayes '
Undercurrent'
Blue Note (1960)
Martin Drew, the late British drummer who often drummed for Ronnie Scott - no relation.
Speaking of Martin Drew, his is a case of one drummer coming to resemble another more famous predecessor, in his case Buddy Rich. Another case would be Julian Joseph, who more and more comes to look like Oscar Peterson, especially in dimensions! One could probably cite others. Could this be a reverse case of masters coming to resemble their pets, one wonders?
Stanfordian’s recents posts have led me to spin 'Speak No Evil’ and I’m really taken (especially) by Elvin Jones’ drumming. Can anyone recommend some recordings that EJ plays on that he really shines?

All of the Coltrane stuff between 1960 and 1965 or '66 imv, when he left and Rashied Ali took over on drums.

Check out the LP "Unity" by Larry Young. Elvin's on fire in that session, so much so he nearly melts Rudy's microphones.
all words are trains for moving past what really has no name

Half-way through this album, listening on Apple Music and I’ve had to order the CD from Amazon - it is a terrific album. From what seems to be my favourite period in Jazz, the early mid 1960s. You’re not wrong about Elvin Jones’ drumming, but the sound of Larry Young’s Hammond B-3 organ is the best I’ve ever heard. Even from streaming, you can tell what a great production has been achieved. I look forward to the arrival of the CD and a proper listen. Must go, BaL is on!
There's a young chap here in London who does a good Larry Young, & is much respected on the scene - Ross Stanley. Look out for any gigs with him in them - you won't be disappointed. Good on joanna, too.

I also had a little listen to this and had to buy it. Awaiting the CD from Amazon. I’m really partial to Jazz from the early sixties to about 1968. Especially the free & avant garde stuff.
