Very different music, of course, but I've often wondered of Coltrane got his idea of having two basses from Ornette's Free Jazz.

Miles Davis - In a Silent Way

There's something Zen about this album, as though provoked by a koan. It's visionary in its exquisiteness.

"Jazz for Moderns" - Tubby Hayes (larger) band, 1962 BBC session, remastered and reissued on vinyl by Gearbox in 2009. The 1962 Hayes quintet with Gordon Beck etc augmented. I hadn't heard this before and it's very good. Listening back to some of these larger Hayes group dates is to recognise the dedication and precision involved. And some great music.

Astonishingly good quality of recording for its date, too - almost sounds Digital, like it was recorded yesterday.

Sometimes you just have to bust out the classics.

That's the album with the tune "Maybe Next Year" that Art Pepper featured on his "Smack Up" 1960 date? It's a fine ballad.
