This was Andrew Hill's first outing for Blue Note and I still think it was one of his best. A lot of this has to do with the drumming of Roy Haynes who is superb on this record. Hill is one of my favourite pianists but I think his playing is always at it's best whenever he has a strong drummer supporting him.

This was the first Andrew Hill album I bought back in the mid-1960s which still sounds great today.
An overlooked BLUE NOTE classic and what a striking cover!

Archie Shepp..."What would it be." from a really mixed bag (politely) of an album "For Losers", c 1970 on Impulse. Following on from the interview in the Guardian where he says he started to try to connect around this time. The album has an awful neo Tom Jones "soul" opening track followed by sub James Brown, but this is a rather lovely ballad written by Cal Massey... worthy of a JRR sometime...

Listening all day to Miles 1965 ESP album - wish the band had played some of these compositions in concert, only "Agitation" seems to have featured on his live sessions. Here is the beautiful "Iris"
