Clayton - Hamilton Jazz Orchestra -"Shout me out."
I have not heard this for ages but listening again I was reminded what a terrific big band this is. Led by the John and the late Jeff Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, I suppose the music is like a West Coast equivalent of the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra with the music coming out of the tradition of the New Testament Count Basie band yet wily enough to include a tribute to fellow West coast composer Horace Tapscott. Bassist John Clayton is one of those writers who is taken for granted, This band is well drilled and polished although rooted in more modern forms of jazz. Soloists include Snooky Young, Oscar Brashear and Bill Cunliffe. Having seen this band back Patti Austen in the early 2000s, I have to say that this is a top notch orchestra and should be better known - I think the infrequent and relatively small number of recordings in has made over the last twenty or so years means it remains comparatively unknown.
I have to say that , in these days when West Coast Big Bands seem to equate to the super-efficient Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band , the Hamilton-Clayton band is more credible as a jazz vehicle and thankfully eschews the cartoonish element of Goodwin's more fusion-laden approach. It is amazing how some orchestras / bands from the past continue to serve as a template for groups 50-80 years later, whether it is Goodman's quartet, the MJQ or Miles' second quintet. In the case of HCJO, it is Basie - even if the former does edge to a more "modern" approach.
Next up, CHJO Live at MCG but time for The Simpsons.
Did anyone see Ornette Coleman featured last night? Last week, Miles' "BoftC" record was cited as Lisa's favourite. Still not seen the episode with Sonny Rollins in. Essential viewing for jazz fans, I think!

That's a great album.
all words are trains for moving past what really has no name
The Chick Corea Memorial Playlist here at TF Towers is playing "Light As A Feather" (Polydor, 1972). Which I note from the Wiki page was recorded in London.
