ECM have been re-issuing some of their more interesting albums from 70s-90s and one that I bought back in October was Enrico Rava's "The pilgrim and the stairs." I think it was Bruce who singled this album out for praise but it does chime in with some of the earlier comments regarding the lyricism of Chet Baker and Joseph's enthusiasm for the plugged-in bands of Miles Davis. The quartet is made up of the trumpeter, Jon Christensen , Palle Danielsson and guitarist John Abercrombie. As someone more familiar with Rava's more lyrical playing, this is a bit of a shock, the music having a brooding European feel typical of the time but refracted through "Filles De Killemanjiro" era Miles. This is not the introspective album I had envisaged and there are moments where the music has the knotty quality of Ornette's playing of the time. Abercrombie's playing does mirror the kind of approach used by Miles' keyboard players and although there is a "rocky" element in the sound, any "jazz-rock" pretentions are hard to recognise 45 years after it's recording.
