‘Indestructible’ - Art Blakey
with Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton & Reggie Workman
Blue Note (1964)
Wayne's last with Blakey before getting swept up by Miles, if I'm not mistaken. "He keeps stealing my musicians!".
Was just now listening to a D90 of Wayne's 2001 quartet with Danielo Perez, John Patititititucci (sorry, just love doing that!) and Brian Blade at the RFH as part of that autumn's London Jazz Festival: his first visit to Britain leading a completely acoustic band, according to Jezza. Had to interrupt to catch today's COTW of James P Johnson - well worth tuning in for.

Cedar Walton - "Piano Solos", a rare LP that never made it to CD as I understand it. 1981 on the "Clear Cuts" label. I've only just discovered this and it's more than a bit special....http://youtu.be/NFdylR81lCI
One of the first albums I bought in 2020 was a live session in a club in Germany by the groups co-led by Harold Land and Bobby Hutcherson that also featured Curtis Fuller. The first track on the album was a little under-whelming and it seemed like an ordinary club date which was fortunate to have been captured for posterity. However, my initial disappointment was reversed when Cedar Walton soloed and the music went up several gears. He is a musician who was somewhat overlooked but this gig shows that, in the moment, he was capable of amazing creativity. The rest of the album is pretty good and the band soon clicks in to place but there is no doubt that Cedar Walton is responsible for the transformation on the remaining 80% of the album. ("Live at Onkel Po's." )
