Still on my songs that have ideal changes for improvisation - "All the things etc" and "Star eyes" are both great for this and provided the basis for two modern jazz classic compositions. Kenny Dorham's "Prince Albert" and Jackie Mclean "Capuchin swing. These are two of the best versions
A too often overused word "icon", but SHE most definitely was. RIP.
I would SO MUCH prefer singing in classical music were it done with her type of voice, and think a lot of modern composers, if not all, have seriously taken a wrong course by not questioning conventions and missed big chances to rid the genre of most unfortunate associations. Debussy's opera "Pélleas et Mélisande" would be perfection, and many a famous opera incalculably improved, if it were done using jazz singers. This is the first time I've said this.
