    Hi there Jazzrook.

I noticed last night the TV Channel PBS America was reshowing the series "Jazz". Partway through the series, but still a long way to go!

This again. I love his phrasing.

Wondered if you had checked out Mary Halvorson?

I have been playing the latest Tomeka Reid quartet disc which features this guitarist. One the face of it, the music recalls Chico Hamilton yet Reid's cello playing seems to owe more to the late, great Billy Bang. I am halfway through the new record which is the second by this group. For my money, Tomeka Reid is one of the most interesting soloists around today and the partnership with Mary Halvorson is pretty much perfect. I am not sure if this record is quite as good as the original recording but I would categorize this very much in line with Jazzrook's tastes. The cello has always been something of a fringe instrument in jazz and maybe Tomeka Reid is the person to break it out into the mainstream. If you are looking for something edgier than the contemporary post-bop, this edgy quartet featuring some Chicago stalwarts is worth checking out.

Bert, that album is absolutely incredible - words fail to do it justice.

… and I could say exactly the same about this album as I did about In a Silent Way! Two of my all-time favourite albums.

I wonder if you have been keeping tabs with The Simpsons over the last few weeks? Tito Puente was featured last week and Jack Sheldon was a guest in one of the episodes that featured this week. I think this cartoon always appears to be a friend to jazz.
