British trumpeter Dick Pearce's "Big Hit" of 1994, with "Big" John Donaldson on piano and keyboards, Val Mannix double bass, and Mike Bradley (who lives just down the road), drums - jazz-rock Latin-tinged post-bop, fairly typical of quite a lot of contemporary jazz from around these parts.
Dick is one of our best trumpet players imv, capable of delivering long, well thought out and paced lines with a pure unwavering tone somewhat reminiscent of Art Farmer, though he always claims Miles his biggest influence. He's quite an amusing character, whose autobiography, which came out a few years ago, is titled "Dizzy Gillespie Was At My Wedding" - the Ronnie Scott connection feeding that droll sense of humour, for sure: Dick was house trumpeter at Scott's for about 10 years, ending in 1992 or 3. Dick bears a remarkable physical resemblance to the American actor James Coburn, though I've not heard this mentioned elsewhere. I once complimented him on his ability to spin out long solos with an economy of ideas, to which he responded, "Well, you soon run out of notes if you're not careful"!
