As I stated yesterday over on the misc & fusion thread, In a Silent Way is one of my best allies. Truly magical, visionary, extraordinarily beautiful...

Ah! I see you've found one on youtube that works of this amazing performance. Truly some of my all-time favourite music.

One of my friends in Vienne worked as a professional drummer and performed with a number of American musicians including Clifford Jordan, Hank Mobley and Nathan Davis. He was at that Coltrane gig in Antibes which he described as incredible. He ultimately ended up teaching drums at the Lyon conservatoire.

I meant to add that I have been playing John Coltrane's "Coltrane's Sound" all week. It dates from 1960 , very early in the days of the classic quartet and before Jimmy Garrison had joined. I wonder whether Joe had checked this record out. Setting aside my reservations about the horrible album cover, the music is absolutely fantastic. The arrangement of "Body & soul" is a gem . My copy includes additional tracks including "26-2" which staggers me insofar I cannot understand how this track ever got rejected. Easily one of Coltrane's best compositions. The whole album is an absolute delight and , in my opinion, Coltrane's most enjoyable album.

Yes, of course, I know that album well, one of my favourites, often staggeringly beautiful. I agree about 26-2. I like the front cover too.

Currently listening to I'll Remember April played by Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Coltrane apparently hated that cover. And by the time it came out I don't think he had much control over Atlantic. It's a very fine album. "Equinox" is the track for me but it's all wonderful.

Yes, it makes him look like he's been napalmed.

There were similar Atlantic covers for Charles Mingus - 'Tonight At Noon'; Milt Jackson - 'Vibrations' & 'Sonny Stitt' - 'Stitt Plays Bird'.
                      The 'artist' was Marvin Israel.

He designed a shed load of sleeves for Atlantic, from R&B through to jazz. Most of them were standard graphic design, very clean. I think he did Giant Steps...ckd my copy, yes he did.

Joe Henderson at Monterey in 1966 with a stellar group - Bobby Hutcherson, Don Moore and Elvin Jones playing "Isotope". wish there were more tracks from that session
