This is really good. I surprised me because I usually find Braxton to be underwhelming in a straight ahead context. There was an album about ten years ago where he was playing standards . I might have even been a gig on Jazz on 3 but it was terrible. Braxton is one of those players I imagined to be someone I could step up to an appreciate yet I have always found him a massive disappointment. He is too difficult for me to get in to and the effort does seem insurmountable. I am always amazed that he has his adherents .

        John Coltrane, Mars.

Incredible colours and euphoria, a cosmic acme of profundity.

This link comes courtesy The Oxford pub in Kentish Town's latest monthly programme email: tenor saxophonist Leo Richardson's able quartet is Monday's offering.

Question is: am I really that interested in another mid-Coltrane reproduction band, however au fait they happen to be? Rick Simson, the pianist, is pretty good and he seems a bit of a character if his self-aspersion in the comment underneath is anything to go by, and he brings his own well-upholstered trio there the following week, so I might just wait.

I thought we were praising this a few weeks back on J to Z? Admittedly with the reservation of 'where next', but the guy +and group can certainly play, seem genuine and committed, and I found it very worthwhile and totally listenable. Not often I get that from J to Z. As to Coltrane reproduction, I hear if anything, more Henderson era Tubby Hayes etc influences. That area of things and not a problem. He's certainly not in it for fame & fortune. I'm fine with it.

A bit harsh of me, maybe. I still don't like his jacket.

An ILL NOISE JACKET?! I still remember a 1970s video of Stan Getz with bouffant hair, & wearing a bright pink jacket with big lapels, yellow trousers and white shoes. Coco the Clown came to mind. Although the playing was fine I could not continue.

Has anyone tried this? Jazz from Spain. I have just come across Joan Chamorro and his quintet, featuring Rita Payes, vocal and trombone, in Flor de Lis. A refreshing sound to my ear.

Coming right up! Lionel Hampton, "Hamp's Jazz Flamenco", recorded in Madrid in 1957, complete with CASTANETS. I think there's an entire album of this stuff, which is an album too much, but when in Spain etc. .."Give the CASTANETA some. ."
