"Last train from Overbrook" - James Moody. Overbrook was a New Jersey mental hospital where he was successfully treated for alcoholism & depression c.1958...http://youtu.be/028UoUkO7zc "I was drinking two gallons of wine a day, I just didn't care". It's a wonderful album with a marvelous little/big band. Moody was such a superb player and lived through a lot.

I was sitting watching TV this morning, with my mini Casio keyboard across my knees, when Theresa's tearful announcement of her welcome departure from Downing Street interrupted the programme. And instantly, without any pre-thought as to appropriateness, I launched into "Every Time We Say Goodbye". My best version of the tune to date, I think.

Hank Mobley - "This I dig of you", because it's such a fabulous tune, fabulous Mobley, and ... when Wynton Kelly takes that "singing" opening solo. One to lift the spirits!

It features a great line-up - other than Jan Garbarek, who I'm not so keen on.

I think Garbarek is fine in that context, not keen on most of his recent work though

Early Garbarek - He started going downhill (imv) with "Spaces" of 1977, where nothing whatever happens, and the talents of otherwise exellent team (including our own John Taylor) were completely wasted, mostly playing synth washes. For me that recording was the start of the ECM slide (pace Ian) For good Garbarek see Kenny Wheeler's "Deer Wan" - a big influence on subsequent tenor saxophonists including Mike Brecker.

Jan Garbarek, with just bass & drums 1967..."Mr PC" live. The "jazz" past is another country...

To be fair I remember him answering my question via Jez Nelson as to whether he himself considered what he does now to be "jazz"? I think the answer was negative. Jazz having lost its meaning or some such.
