Dug our cornetist Rob Mazarek's "Double demon" which comprises of Jason Adasiewicz on vibes plus a drummer. I find Mazarek an extremely intense player. This trio is no exception. The record had really good reviews but given the driven nature of much of JA's playing, it is often a relentless and hard listen. Although there are only three players, the music packs the kind of punch for an ensemble four times are large. The music is aggressive and I sometimes feel that the three musicians are not totally engaged with each other. Mazarek doesn't seem interested in interaction and keen to apply his cornet floating over the top of the maelstrom that is produced underneath. There is plenty of energy there yet the lack of a ballad or something more thoughtful makes this something of a hell-for-leather experience.

Wondered is anyone else had experience of Mazarek's playing ? He is highly regarded yet the thing of his I liked better than any of his "projects" was a duo he made with guitarist Jeff Parker which is more relaxed and less relentless. His other work can never be described as relaxing!

Earlier today: Coltrane's Interstellar Space, which keeps getting better for me. Now: A Love Supreme (studio version).

            Nice n Comfy

Life changes. Nicky Horne has gone from "Your Mother Wouldn't Like It" (Capital Radio, 1970s) via Rock Planet to "Your Mother Would Like It and I Am Probably Now Your Mother" (BBC Southern Counties, 2019). Actually, once I had got over the "how can this be?" dilemma, I quite liked the unfussy, almost serious, presentation. That is, the one accompanying what even in Radio 2's Katie Boyle days would have been considered overly light.

Anyhow, on every Sunday night for the next two months, there will be extensive clips of Sinatra in a range of rehearsals for radio. This was the medium he liked best. Yes, they will be interspersed by the likes of "Love Letters" by Ketty Lester and other trifles which suddenly now seem oddly fresh. Still, long gone are the days when it was one of just two records which drove my father into moving home though that says something about its force.

I mention all of this because in this edition there were - and this follows on from that documentary last year about Nat Cole being packaged "white" - some quite intriguing moments involving Nat with Frank. The clips will also appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of radio. One warning. Early on, we get several doses of Bryan Ferry and, gawd, Emeli Sande''s "old jazz" CD from last year. That had hitherto managed to pass me by.

I would have preferred it if that situation hadn't changed.

But as my great, great, grandfather still sings whenever he sniffs money, you caynnnn't always get what you want.

This has to be one of the most beautiful jazz ballads ever recorded - Sam Rivers "Beatrice" from Fuchsia Swing Song.

Was listening again to Dankworth’s Zodiac Variations again today. The double cd with $1,000000 collection was one of my best buys of last year. Any recommendations for further listening , to save me research time, please?

Excellent choices, teamsaint. If I may recommend "What's the Dickens", the Johnny Dankworth Big Band recording preceding the "Zodiac Variations", and recorded in 1963.

My mother and I used to disagree about him. I thought "spoof", she said "affectionate tribute" regarding his music . She was great fan of his Brass Fantasy but not of the Art Ensemble
