As I understand it, the words are the main focus, the music being just backdrop padding.

                      The $1,000,000 Collection.
                      John Dankworth and his Orchestra.

Edit: I couldnt say for sure if this is a brilliant re master, but it sure does sound wonderful.
i bought this in the double CD with the Zodiac Variations. Dont know any of his other music so suggestions for discs to head to next would be welcome.

My favourite Dankworth LP: it has all the virtues and none of the weaknesses of much of his music, plus some great solos - the original, which I still have on vinyl, ain't bad.

Your recommendation, S-A , so I have you to thank.
Just reading the sleeve notes, I see that five of the compositions are based on tone rows.

I have to admit my only Dankworth record (LP and download) is "Johnny Dankworth and the London Philharmonic". Not so fond of the Salzedo/Lindup Rendezvous, but the Seiber/Dankworth Improvisationsistions for Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra and Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto are much to my taste. A certain Dudley Moore on piano:

Indeed - and I understand the Seiber/Dankworth Improvisations was composed before West Side Story - and not the other way around!
