As someone not paerticularly into male singers I have to say I quite like Gregory Porter, evenif he is something of a cheerleader for the Bible Belt.
I reported from his concert last month at Semperoper Dresden. I don't normally do Jazz concerts but I was asked by the organisers to place it on my list. Such easy voice production. A Sunday morning concert on 11.00am I recall Porter from the stage saying how he was not used to performing during mornings. He has a particularly excellent tenor sax player Tivon Pennicott. I wasn't too aware of much Bible-Bashing in his set.
"Poor Eric" a heartfelt tribute to Eric Dolphy from pianist Larry Willis from Jackie Mac's " Right Now" album with a very beautiful moving solo from Jackie. Bob Cranshaw on Bass and Clifford Jarvis Drums.
‘True Blue’
Tina Brooks, Freddie Hubbard, Duke Jordan, Sam Jones & Art Taylor
Blue Note (1960) - probably my favourite Blue Note album at the moment
