One of the few things I agree with Ian about is Maria Schneider! Hey, how about that.

Did I hear Alyn say last week that he wanted JRR requests for an upcoming R3 "Idea of the North" Scandinavian season? If so ...

Steve Kuhn trio - "Dear old Stockholm", Kuhn, the Coltrane Qrt's first pianist pre Tyner, lived in Sweden in the late 60s with Monica Zetterlund. Very fine track, and Monica RIP herself was pretty neat and hip. V.funny about Miles's not so subtle chat up line.

I liked the Kamasi Washington track but had been out off by the fact that the album consists of three CDs and is over 3 hours of music. I'd heard Washington with Gerald Wilson's big band and he was one of the most impressive soloists, sounding a bit like Pharoah Sanders.

Listening to the Hodge / Ellington record coming out of football this evening, I never cease to be amazed at the brilliance of this disc. I love Ellington but even by his high standards, this is a sensational record. It is a perfect line up and the oddness of Duke's piano playing which is very much askance the general drift of this material seems totally timeless. For me, the piano playing is the icing on the cake and although the other soloists play things to perfection with total economy of notes, Ellington's contribution makes this record stretch out towards players like Matthew Shipp. It is a timeless disc and as perfect as say Miles' "Kind of Blue." It is funny how some record do this. I have been playing Sonny Rollins' "the bridge" in the car nearly all week and this too is really difficult to place historically. It is pretty modest in it's scope yet could also be considered "perfect." If someone told me this record was recorded 5 years ago, it would not be a ridiculous statement.

It is curious that so many Norwegians seem to be cropping up in Chicago (see the latest disc with Josh Berman) but I have a pretty negative impression of Scandinavian jazz following the vogue for "Nu Jazz" in the early 2000's. This seemed to undo a lot of the good work done by some of the ECM characters in the 70's and 80's where musicians from this part of the world brought something new and exciting to jazz. It is a matter of taste, I suppose, as it was around the 2000's that I first started to feel that there was quite a bit of contemporary jazz which I didn't like including the likes of Molvaer and EST as well a that Bugge bloke. I see that the arch "Nu Jazz" group St Germain have released a new album, a follow up to the amazingly commercially successful "Tourist" which hooked a lot of listeners about 15 years ago. Funny to think that people could be getting nostalgic for these kinds of bands!! Must be getting old....

Agree about the Ellington. The guitarist on that was Les Spann who also played fine guitar and flute with Dizzy

I remember an interview years ago with Jimmy Jewell, the tenor player for Joan Armatrading. When they toured the US in the 70s he wandered around Harlem and came upon what he called a busted "wino" playing great guitar out on the sidewalk for cents with a amp lead running back to a basement window. Les Spann.
