Listening to Alyn's comment about seasonal themed music for next week's JJR, my immediate thought was about the whole spring themed album by Kenny Dorham. Not familiar with this record which also features Cannonball Adderley but 4 tunes feature in Walter Davis Jr's book of Dorham compositions.

I heard one track which does not sound unlike the music Jimmy Heath made for the same label, Riverside

Jamie Cullum has been quite imaginative in his selections as stand-in this week, I have to say.

First time I’ve heard of that Kenny Dorham album. Not easy to find at a reasonable price!

        Here’s ‘Blue Spring’:

The album appears to be a suite with the 4 pieces I have music for being thematically linked.

          Not even available on Avid.

There are quite a few Kenny Dorham albums made fir Riverside which are obscure. I have am Avid cd which includes some but not 'Blue spring' which features a larger ensemble than usually associated with Dorham. It is odd that Avid selected the 2 ballad albums including the vocal disc which is underwhelming. The 2 horn and 1 rhythm album with Ernie Henry has been mentioned in here before. Some of that music appears in the music book too.

i quite like the originals from the Blue Spring album and the obscure nature of the record makes it really intriguing. There are loafs of Dorham records which are forgotten these days and date from.prior to his return to Blue Note. The more familiar compositions feature in the book yet there are other recording dates that I have never heard of including session with Art Taylor. Wondered of Bluesnik had heard the spring record.

If Mario is still around, I woukd recommend the book of his music.

            Dorham is seriously underrated.

Don Cherry with Ian Dury & The Blockheads playing ‘Yes and No(Paula)’ in 1980.

This concert will be on BBC Four tonight(21/3/25) starting at 9.15pm.

Kenny's "Blue spring" album is available on an eight album box set (HMV list it) "Essential albums". I've got it and it's fine and cheap @ £10.99). It's also on Amazon and I'm sure I've seen the single CD there also. Most of it was also part of a Riverside KD double LP retrospective set way back (late 70s?) on Riverside. I also bought this back then. I'm currently listening to his excellent Swedish dates which I also picked up fairly cheaply. There's a story on the Riverside LPs by Orin K that Kenny, who at the very end didn't have very much, bought a brand new camel overcoat just to wear over his shabby suit to attend Wynton Kelly's funeral. A mark of respect. I once had a brief correspondence with his daughter who was extremely proud of him ...rightly so.
