Article on Slugs’ Saloon in The Nation

In the late 1960s, the recording industry lost interest in America’s greatest art form. But in a small, dark club on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, jazz legends were playing the best music you’ve never heard.

Ethan Iverson posted some pics of the "upcoming attractions" gig flyers from Slugs' ("in the Far East") which make you wish you could invent a time machine and go back.

Imagine turning up with your horn to a jam session there led by none other than Art Blakey. Or a personal highlight for me being from what I guess is March 1970 with Harold Land and Bobby Hutcherson playing an entire week from 24 "thru" (sic) 29 with Mingus on the following week. Or Ornette on 3-5 September 1971. Just one legend after another playing in the club.
