    Silenced plight

More compositions by Wadada Leo Smith in store for this Saturday's New Music Show. Anyone listen last week? Well worth the effort, I thought:

Jazz Record Requests is/are suspended this week. 3 hours' worth of carols to enjoy instead.

I see that the jazz journalist Chris May has passed away. I was surprised how old be was given his promotion of 'woke jazz ' over the last few years. I found his comments on All About Jazz to often be baffling, taking an approach not too dissimilar to Stuart Nicholson 20 years ago. I ultimately gave up on Nicholson and did not necessarily agree with what Chris May had to say. Both critics seemed quite modish and worlds away from how I perceived jazz.

I tend to be sceptical of reviewers with an agenda and Chris May seemed to prefer jazz that showed the influence of Africa. All About Jazz is a funny place to imbibe your jazz as it seems to be more of a vehicle to get product out into the market as opposed to having it's finger on the pulse.
