    Kith and Ken

    Sat 29 Aug
    5.00 Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton presents an eclectic jazz playlist of requests, including recordings by trombone duo JJ Johnson and Kai Winding

Art Pepper with extremely interesting line-up track 6; our host on track 8.

    6.00 Jazz Line-Up
Julian Joseph presents a collaborative concert set featuring BBC Radio 3 New Generation Jazz Artist Trish Clowes and vocalist Norma Winstone, recorded last October at Kings Place, London. (R)

Repeat of the pleasant if slightly underwhelming event I attended, taking care not to ruffle either programme or hair.

Julian Joseph presents a concert from saxophonist Trish Clowes and singer Norma Winstone.

    12.00 Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
Jamaica's gift to British jazz, altoist Joe Harriott (1928-73) combined bebop fire with intuitive, free-form improvisation and Indo-Jazz fusion, producing a series of ground-breaking recordings before his early death. Geoffrey Smith salutes a rare talent.

Jamaican altoist Joe Harriott. Bebop fire mixed with intuitive free-form improvisation.

    Mon 31 Aug
    11.00 Jazz on 3
Jez Nelson introduces a performance by Ken Vandermark's improvisational quartet Made to Break and talks to jazz writer Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader.

Chicago-based saxophonist Ken Vandermark performs with his ensemble Made to Break.

Yep JRR looks good. Fine Art Pepper although I prefer his glorious late fifties take where Hoagy C made him play behind a screen. "I don't need alto solos, I just wanna whistle". Johnny Mandel intervened for Art. And artistry.

And Jack Montrose et Bob Gordon..." Outskirts of Town"...great baritone and a sure time/mood to lever open the red. Was this requested by Jrook of this parish?

    Cooooooooooooooool.

    BN.

Paul Moer, the pianist on the Montrose/Gordon track recorded an entire CD of Elmo Hope compositions in tribute. That alone makes him 'a jazz leg-end' in my book. Seriously, a v. fine pianist.

Really good program all round. Btw, the string etc. arrangement on Art's "Winter Moon" was by Bill Holman. Jimmy Bond is also credited on the album as arranger. Not sure if Alyn mentioned that.

The Montrose / Gordon track was really good. Not heard that before.

I was really intrigued by the story of the pianist who sat in with Armstrong in a jam session in London and would be fascinated to learn more. This is an account that that is really intriguing because you want to know who else jammed with him and where did they play. To think that the pianist in question also played with Kathleen Ferrier is incredible. This an account which is worthy of a documentary or magazine article.

JRR much improved, with standards of Requests increasing markedly.

However I'm not sure I would want a surgeon to carry out a surgical procedure to the strains of Dizzy Gillespie - seems to me a risk of his knife slipping when Dizzy hits a high note.

They should be grateful! It could have been "Mack the Knife"!

Or worse, "Butcher Pete" (he chops that meat). Roy Brown?

This is Dizzy from Feb 1953 with his "operatic" strings. As expected Dizzy is irrepressible if not ebullient and the orchestra in tow is l arranged by a 21 y...

Seeing the GSJ playlist for Harriott, it seems impossible it was 9 years ago that Soweto Kinch and I made the JH story for Jazz File. In case anyone's interested in a rather more, um, adventurous playlist than Saturday's programme, here are the links to the Jazz File:
The Joe Harriott story profiles the musical career of Jamaican-born alto saxophonist Harriott, who pioneered free jazz in Britain in the late 1950s even before Ornette Coleman had begun his experiments into freedom in the United States.

C90s! I see now that Joe's albums are now all "handy" to download on YouTube. Not sure of the ethics but when you think how relatively hard they were to get at one time. Does it encourage an active appreciation or just pick and mix/devalue everything ...
