Something maybe of interest at 19.30 today, Sunday...

Reed was a friend of Cecil Taylor, Ayler etc, has worked with David Murray and plays piano himself, as well as his literary output...

" Ishmael Reed - American Trickster

    Sunday Feature

Ishmael Reed is a true polymath - a writer, public intellectual, publisher, musician and activist. In this Sunday Feature, Lindsay Johns travels to Oakland, California to meet this American polymath in the place which has shaped his thinking, as the two discuss Reed's work, and his ideas.

As they move around the city, Lindsay discovers the roots of Reed's iconoclasm, which has led him to challenge positions across the political spectrum; his extraordinary work ethic; and his wish to broaden the range of writers who get to tell their own stories. They'll discuss Reed's literary activism, the impact of meeting Malcolm X on his own life, and why being a famous writer may have saved him being harmed by the local crack dealers... "

Thanks also from me, BN - I would have missed that programme.

My screen also came up with other BBC themed recommendations, including of Val Wilmer's photographs of jazz greats from 2017, but the only one actually shown was of herself fronting a large photo of Sun Ra at the talk she gave at Café Oto. I managed to foul up on my probably one and only opportunity ever to talk to Val. She was a couple of places behind me in a queue for one of Keith Tippett's last ever gigs, at the Union Chapel in Islington. Not being an occasion to be wasted on pleasantries about the rain, I just managed to say "Hello".

Cue moral of the story advice: what we could all have said when meeting important forces in one's lifetime, but didn't!

Not the same, but I once met Princess Di. The "royal train" had broken down just outside Swindon (how romantic) and we had to entertain her and her bodyguard etc for an hour in our office (Business Development). She was actually very pleasant and apologised loudly to me for being "such a nuisance!" I said "It's OK Babes, how would you like a large glass of vino while I play you some Ayler tapes?" "Ain't you got no bleedin' Wham or Roxy Music?!" she murmured royally. Worra toff.
