    The great Benny Golson died on Saturday after a short illness, he was 95.

          Sad loss of a great composer/tenor player, I was tempted to attach a version of "Whisper Not" from the 'Bag's Opus album but Benny, Milt and Art Farmer play such fine solo's on" Afternoon in Paris" it had to be that track.

            I was fortunate enough to see Benny Golson perform live in an all-star setting. My first acquaintance with him was on a Dizzy Gillespie album that I think was on Verve and also featured Gigi Gryce

            The strange thing about him was that his tone changed radically in later years. I seemed to become harder and less broad.

            I also see that guthatist Russell Malone died a few weeks ago aged 60. I always felt he was underrated.
