    Clap Hands Here Comes Charlap

    Sat 25 July
    5.00 Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton plays requests for recordings by pianists Renee Rosnes and Bill Charlap, a classic track by Lester Young, and a piece by American saxophonist Tina Brooks

See also the Tina Brooks thread.

    6.00 Jazz Line-Up
Saxophonist Joe Temperley returns to his home town of Lochgelly, Fife, for a special duo concert with pianist Brian Kellock. With Julian Joseph

Julian Joseph presents saxophonist Joe Temperley and pianist Brian Kellock in concert.

A several generations leapfrogging session. Joe was on my very first jazz LP, Humph's "Blues in the Night".

No Geoffrey Smith, but I don't believe it's Goodbyeeeeeee yet.

    Monday 27 July
    11.00 Jazz on 3

Americans Mark Guiliana (drums) and Chris Morrissey (bass) perform with British saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings in an improvised session.

It's been some time without Shabaka, the nice guy who's well over 6 foot and people look up to, who can always come up with something interesting and unexpected.

The JRR Tina Brooks track is Miss Hazel -
Thankfully not a tribute to the vacuous and
grasping Ms Blears. Now lording the Co-op.

I see Dicky Hawdon is on one of the trad
tracks - he always interested me as he later
went 50s "modern" with Tubby Hayes. I think
he caught "Clifford Brownitis" in the eyes
of the figs. Interesting if erratic player with still a
    touch of tradism.

    BN.

Dickie joined the Dankworth band for a while. After he retired from a long career at Leeds College of Music, he was a regular correspondent to Jazz Library and JRR. Thoughtful knowledgeable bloke and taught a lot of the excellent musicians who came out of LCM.

I see Alan Wakeman is also featured in a track - presumably the same AW with the, ahem, in rock terms better-known brother, though I don't recognise any of the other names.

Dickie Hawdon is in that piece (BBC?) where Ronnie Scott, Laurie Morgan, Benny Green etc all amuse themselves at rare home movie footage of them all "larking" in fifties Soho. Dickie H had a big moustache I think.

Very firmly in the Trad category back in '49, however.

I've just looked up Rachael Johnson, not having previously heard of her, and here is her site-liness in HD b&w leggo, ahem:

The effects on the piano can quite clearly be seen.

Rachel Johnson, sister of Boris, no relation one presumes...

I was wondering that, but she's prob too busy gasping how awwwwwwful poverty is for the poor whilst editing the Lady.

I found the Colyer skiffle track, "Wandering", quite affecting. No really. Back in the bad old days when true live jazz was Welsh trad, no refunds, the Mike Harries jazz band (Cardiff) used to play Ken's "Going Home" lament at er, going home time. So a kind of memory lane for me.

On with the duffle coat, glue on the ginger beard, pocket the warm Barley Wine and dance with a girl called Hazel....who just loves the dreamy duck-like sound of the banjo.

              BN.

Very abruptly faded at its... "ending", maybe? I was wondering if that was how it was on the record, or whether Alyn couldn't take any more, and figured that we couldn't, either!
