A clip of DS onstage with his Jazz Quintet (Billy Kitson etc) in January of this year. Looks like he had to have assistance to get on/off stage, but moving.

I was saddened to hear about this . The influence of Hank Crawford loomed large but Sanborn started off being mentored by Julius Hemphill and drummer Phil Wilson. He went on to make his name with Gil Evans including work on the Priestss album which was arguably Evans' last great album.


Sanborn seemed to move more towards Fusion albeit it was a more soulful and jazz oriented approach. I saw him perform at Vienne and thought it was a good gig. He was also associated with the late guitarist Hiram Bullock who also performed with Gil Evans.


I also saw that contempcontemporary guitarist Sylvain Luc had passed away in March aged 58. He was another musician I recall from Vienne as being a really interesting player, pushing a Django styled approach into some really interesting areas. He was one of France's most important jazz musicians of the last 30 years but sadly over looked in the UK.

Just chiming in here on what Ian just wrote about the St Louis connection to Philip Wilson, Hemphill and others from the BAG. The connections between the avant-garde and the tradition run deep and Sanborn had a part to play in it. Those guys did not see a boundary between any of those forms. Phillip and Lester (Bowie) did not discriminate about styles of music. Lester played in a circus band, society gigs, straight ahead gigs. He played with Jimmy Forrest. He met his wife Fontella “Rescue Me” Bass on a gig with the Clara Ward Gospel Singers.

I own one Sanborn LP: Voyeur from 1981, which whilst of its time stands up very well, and I gave it a spin yesterday. I never realised that Sanborn was more than "just" a R&B player. RIP.

One of the best gigs I've ever been to was Sanborn at the Hammersmith Odeon [Palais?] in the late 80's, brilliantly tight band. I may be wrong but I think Marcus Miller may have been on bass. Also saw him at the famous Mandela concert at Wembley, he was supporting Sting. Brilliant player.

Very good live interview with Dave Sanborn in St Louis, him talking about the musicians he grew up with there and the clubs, who he heard, Horace Silver, Hank Crawford, Ray Charles, Cannonball etc etc. Really excellent, a very warm guy...
