    Clarence Gene Shaw

    The underrated trumpeter, Clarence Shaw is probably best known for his excellent work with Charles Mingus in the '50s but he also recorded a few LPs under the name of Gene Shaw in the early '60s. I was glad to discover a recent CD re-issue of his 1962 quintet session 'Breakthrough'(DUSTY GROOVE DGA 3015) which features inventive and soulful hard bop. Mingus once said that "If 'Tijuana Moods' had been released in 1957 instead of 1962, Shaw would be a star today".
    Anyone who loved Shaw's playing on that album should check out the marvellous but little-known 'Breakthrough'.

        Gene (Clarence) Shaw...escape from Mingus...

        Gene Clarence Shaw (tres fine trumpet, Moods, East Coasting etc.), who Mingus threatened to shoot to kill in the late 50s...he had flu and missed a record date, cut three very fine and unusual albums for Argo in the early 60s. Esp. the suite with Richard Davis.

        WELL worth cking excerts out on Yewtube.

          Mo Clarence Shaw stuff...he took Mingus's threat so seriously that he smashed up his trumpet, dropped out for a year and moved to Chicago.

          Then recorded as Gene Shaw.

                If you ck around the net theres some lovely stuff from those who played with him. Highly regarded by all. Chuck Nessa said he was a sweet guy but maybe responsible for his own lack of recognition.

                These "footnotes" to the music really matter IMHO. They gave their lives to this stuff/art form. Bill Hardman is another...superb on the day.
