I think that there is probably a bigger picture with saving money /repeats and shaping up how radio will look like in the future. Radio 2 was recently assciated with the Cheltenham Jazz Fesival but i read today that there are hardly any jazz acts playing this year.It is headlined by Robert Plant and Dianne Warwick! Effectively it is a jazz festival with 50% pop - which I would expect to be chosen for Radio2 broadcast instead od Dave Douglas or John Zorn!

I am not too impressed by the way local radio has been handled. The proposed specialist Radio 2 stations will offer little for jazz. Not a station I have listened to since Humph passed.

I've only just noted that Jamie Cullum's "The Jazz Show" is still featured on Radio 2 between 9 and 10 pm on Tuesday nights, though I have to admit I never bother listening to it.

Makes me nostalgic for the days of Jezz on 3 and their free Cheltenham shows. I saw Brötzmann play there once (again I have included the umlaut in the name in case pedants are reading this). Not sure I can be bothered to turn up to see Bob Plant.

There are a few really good gigs this year, Bruce. The bands for the jazz festival at Vienne have not been announced yet but I will almost certainly be going to Cornwall instead as I am not sure how my fiancee's visa will deal with European travel. The last few years at Vienne have also moved further towards pop. I can understand the need to attract a wider audience but there is a point where the jazz festivals are not really a jazz festival anymore. In my opinion, I feel that the festivals combined with the media have not really helped insofar that they have not really created much interest in jazz since the mid 2000s. When they have, they seem to have backed the wrong horses. When I was listening to jazz for the first time, the music media could still conjure up interest in a wide range of jazz. There are not so many "legacy" jazz musicians around these day either - hence someone like Robert Plant getting the invite.

Not listened to Jamie Cullum's jazz programme for years. It was an odd mix of jazz. It seemed to be very FM friendly and too radically different from Humph who struck the right balance with his choice of music as well as having a presentation style which I found amusing. Loved his sense of humour. Cullum seems to be trying to appeal to a younger crowd but I am not 100% convinced that there is a demand amongst most jazz fans for the stuff he played. Again, too groove orientated and not enough "classic" jazz, in my opinion.

I have been looking at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival line-up. There are some legit jazzers in there such as Brad Mehldau (6 May), Dee Dee Bridgewater (4 May), Kit Downes and Norma Winstone (4 May), Lakecia Benjamin (4 May), Dave Douglas/Trish Clowes (4 May), Snarky Puppy (5 May - sold out), Courtney Pine (5 May), Jay Rayner (yes the food critic off the telly and son of Claire), and Gregory Porter (6 May). So not as bleak as it seemed, even if it's not exactly packed with anything much that excites.

Well there are one or two more jazz things - Theo Croker, Elaine Delmar, NYJO, Nikki Yeoh, not to mention Clare Teal and Liane Carroll.

Bother. I'd missed them! Thanks for the update.
