Val Wilmer, writer and photographer, shares the soundtrack of her life with Lauren Laverne

At least Val Wilmer's featuring on Sunday's Desert Island Discs is some consolation from Radio 4! This JRR is a repeat of the Tony Bennett memorial; Saturday's J to Z yet another repeat, from last September. Whoever didn't notice last week's Freeness erroneous link, I'm not blaming anyone else.

Joanna McGregor is playing some versions by her of Chick Corea and Mary Lou Williams pieces on Wednesday's Lunchtime Concert at 1pm, plus a personal tribute to Nina Simone. Lovely person though she is Joanna, who has collaborated with Django Bates and Andy Sheppard in the past, would be the first to say she is not a jazz pianist.

    Many thanks, S_A
I rarely listen.to 'Desert Island Discs' but look forward to hearing Val Wilmer's choices on Sunday. Should be fascinating.
RT describes Sunday's JRR as "an edition from last August showcasing crooner Tony Bennett."
Could do without all these repeats.

Last week's J to Z was its SECOND repeat! However I am a little surprised that we have a repeated Jazz Record Requests; was Tony Bennett really so important to the jazz lineage to merit one? I hope this doesn't set a precedent.

Can anyone remember Jazz Record Requests ever being repeated, because I can't. Maybe it was time someone put me right on this.

No - I've been listening to JRR since it started in 1964 and can't recall an edition ever being repeated until now.

It would be interesting to see if audience figures will be released for the JRR Tony Bennett tribute. I would guest that they are likely to be higher than for the normal fare.

I think that the most alarming thing is that by taking JRR off air this week, jazz from it's golden era fron 1920s-70s will probably not get broadcast elsewhere on the national networks. Hopefully it is just a one off.

I listened to Val Wilmer's Desert island Discs instead. I'm going to send the link to my online friends. Lauren Laverne was just right as her interviewer, and what a great selection of recordings, the Kodaly included. Hadn't realised Val was a South Londoner: Stre'umm, a couple of miles away - same as Stan Tracey and Don Weller to name just two off the top of me bonce.

Good Desert Island, only shame is it could have been longer but that's the format. I liked her anecdote about being hit on the head by a dustbin lid at a demonstration, the SWP then apologising to her. Good manners!

I've never seen her photograph of Freddie Redd, I'll now look for it.

The SWP were apt to be slip-handed (literally) when lobbing stuff regardless of who was between them and the the Boys In Blue. I was right next to Martin Webster, 2nd in command of the NF, when a half-brick landed - on him, but it could as easily have been me!

This looks like Val's photograph of Freddie Redd:

Sixty years ago Valerie Wilmer drew out considerable biographical detail on the pianist who came to fame for his part in The Connection and died last month. First published in Jazz Journal April 1961
