    Under the Thum

Where is Ian?? I miss him, first we lost Stanfordian now Ian has abandoned ship. I disagreed with some of his opinions (especially on Hank Mobley) but his wide ranging posts were always interesting and thought provoking. The Bored is lesser without him.

elmo - I'll PM you about that
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I miss his lengthy and interesting posts and agree the bored is lacking without him.
Don't think he'll be back, somehow.

P.S. He's still reviewing on Amazon - recently a biography of Chick Webb, 'Rhythm Man' by Stephanie Stein Crease.

                IT PHONE HOME!

I too demand explanations of IT QC's abduction by aliens... probably the Stan Getz liberation army.

I have crossed swords with him on many occasions... Clifford Brown, Hank Mobley, Stan Getz, Chet etc etc ...Jean- Luc Godard, blimey, even a stray post about an old Andre Previn 45 once! But not so much lately.

                So..."Oú est Ian?"

Btw , I do remember Ian requesting a Ron Coltrane track once on JRR...the great Enfield tenor player and Avant garde alcoholic. Geoff Smith played something appropriate.

I'm not so sure why there has to be secrecy (PMs sent). Just search for Ian's last posts on one particular thread and it becomes obvious why he left.

The state of jazz message boards is interesting. The old Bluenote MB in the States blew up over to turn to fringe jazz artists, the successor Jazz Corner in Newark deeply fragmented over the 2003 Iraq war and beyond, and sheer burden of administering it. There was a Bluenote review board on Amazon that was taken down overnight. Organissimo (States) is good when it's good, but seems to be a victim of age, collectiveitis and stamp collecting. This board is fine and I'm grateful but it's only the core now left. If people care about jazz they do so differently and are less inclined to do so online. The lights are going out all over ...

Jazz is still a key part of what R3 offers and as long as that is the case the jazz board here will carry on (as long as I do anyway )
