The Sheppard was my girlfriend's lord

    Saturday 30 May

    Radio 3

    5.00 Jazz Record Requests
Alyn Shipton's selection of listeners' requests marks this week's 50th anniversary of the meeting between John Coltrane and drummer Roy Haynes.

    1965? Is that right??

    6.00 Jazz Line-Up
Claire Martin presents a performance by UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard and Italian pianist Rita Marcotulli, recorded in April in Hall One at Sage Gateshead as part of the Gateshead International Jazz Festival.

I thought the reason for my girlfriend not inviting me into her flat was that she had a lifesize naked poster of Andy Sheppard, but it wasn't so...

    12.00 Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
British jazz singer Norma Winstone has inspired composers such as Kenny Wheeler, excelled at free improvisation and standards, composed lyrics and led her own innovative groups. Geoffrey Smith salutes an artist still in her prime.

I'm willing to bet "Well Kept Secret" and "Laydeez in Mercaydeez" will be on the Rawlescall.

    Monday 1 June

    11.00 Jazz on 3
British pianist and composer Keith Tippett performs his piece "The Nine Dances of Patrick O'Gonogon" in session with his octet, also featuring guest vocalist Julie Tippetts.

Not to be missed as this is Keith returning to straight ahead roots, and giving much of the solo space over to his mostly youngish band - not that that Keith doesn't solo that much is a recommendation, mind; but I saw this suite performed to an enthralled full house at the Vortex a few years ago.

Keith's doing a solo sesh at the Vortex on Thursday 11 June, btw.

Oh and ere I forget, well done for getting it right RT editors - Keith TippETT and Julie TippETTS. Not everybody knows that. I could explain but I'll save me breff, and you lot your boredom.

Gosh, I'm quite enjoying this standing in malarky!

        Many thanks, S_A.

As far as I know Trane & Roy Haynes(standing in for Elvin Jones) first recorded together at the Village Vanguard on November 2, 1961('Chasin' Another Trane').

The Radio Times piece is misleading - the '50th anniversary' should refer to the particular 1965 track being played on JRR.

Trane and Roy first recorded together on 11 Sept 58 at the Five Spot in Monk's quartet. Radio Times and BBC online cut down my copy based on a request from Jazzrook...and it is BN's Barney request today.

Many thanks, Alyn & will look forward to hearing 'Dear Lord' from 1965.
