Phil Woods and His European Rhythm Machine.

Phil Woods European Rhythm Machine existed between March 1968 & December 1972 and recorded six albums altogether.
One of the best was 'At The Frankfurt Jazz Festival' recorded in 1970.
In 'The Essential Jazz Records:Volume 2'(MANSELL 2000) Stuart Nicholson writes: "Joshua represents the climax of the album, a true tour de force with every member of the group contributing in equal measure to a highly successful performance".

Phil Woods kept our Gordon Beck prestigiously employed for a while.

Many British altoists think of Peter King as being "our Phil Woods".

I was listening to France Musique/Jazz last night, a four part series on the great saxophonists, and they played a recording of Phil Woods and Zoot Sims "jousting" together on a 50s jazz date in Russia ('the glorious Soviet") and the comrades went totally nuts, banging their snowboots, clapping like red seals, shouting "Philski et Zootz, ze new Lenin and Trotsky", and hurling 3 litre vodka bottles...(empty).

Jazz, the music of the Revolution AND Lady Rosa Ga Ga Lux.

      BN.

Phil is/was a mad man ... talking to him backstage at a L.A. club about his older ladyfriend who was very conspicuous during the younger Phil's gig with Quincy at The Birdhouse, in Chicago.

Phil telling me how she bought him a full fur-coat for that Chicago winter weather!
