Sat 29 July
5.30pm - J to Z
Another chance to hear a special edition first broadcast last October for Black History Month, with presenter Kevin Le Gendre joined by flautist and composer Nicole Mitchell to explore jazz, Afrofuturism and beyond. Featuring recordings by Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane and others. Mitchell also shares some of her favourite Afrofuturist tracks, including recordings by Nala Sinephro, Moor Mother and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Note the changed start time.
12midnight - Freeness
For nearly six decades, composer, saxophonist and flautist Henry Threadgill (now 79) has been an illustrious figure in "post jazz". He is a core member of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a pioneering body both for forward-thinking music and a radical approach to education. Threadgill's new book Easily Slip into Another World, is a vivid memoir from a true polymath. To mark its recent release he joins Corey Mwamba for reflections on improvising, composing, and nurturing creativity.
Sun 30 July
4pm - Jazz Record Requests
Jazzing the classics, if you'll pardon the expression.
Tues 1 Aug - 10.15pm - BBC Proms
From the Royal Albert Hall, an evening of jazz standards performed by Grammy-winning Memphis-born singer/songwriter Dee Dee Bridgewater alongside Carnegie Hall's National Youth Jazz orchestra. Presented by Katie Derham. Dee Dee Bridgewater (vocals), NYO Jazz director Sean Jones (trumpet).
The above gets the TV treatment on Friday:
