Jazz fans of a certain age (me, early 60s mods) may remember discovering Les McCann's first few albums on World Pacific which, while no Elmo Hope-'in (who is?) , kicked along in a head nodding soul jazz way. Les could (and did) grind a VERY simple lick into the dust, but it was good for parties and/or three minutes. Miles liked him and suggested him to Adderley pre Bobby Timmons. I always thought he'd have gone down well with the Jazz Revival Lonnnnnndon thing of the '80s?
ANYWAY, Brother Les's first album (1960?) has been re-released (a seven track session with Teddy Edwards) plus a selection of his early trio "hits"... The Truth, Fish this Week, Vacushna, Chitlings etc. Prob. the best way to dig him as his clunky ballads were sub Garner/tres tedious.
I am about to order this... will report back from "the cellar".
It's on "Giant Steps" (UK) part of the Cherry Red group. It says here...
Bon Easter - BN.
