Dammit, I've gone and missed most of JLU through not first checking!

Never mind - thanks Calum - and just in time for the fine Mark Edwards' band.

I see our very own Alexander Hawkins is in the Horvitz band on Jon3 - the boy done good. And BTW Wolter Wierbos is an extraordinary trombonist of the Dutch free scene of serious humorists from the 70s. I seem to remember saxophonist John Dikeman coming up here a year or 2 ago with some recommendation as a post-Ayler player to watch.

This was the last thread started by Calum, so I thought I'd use this excuse to wish him an enjoyable Xmas and a return to these shores as soon as he feels up to it.

        Best wishes for 2016, Calum!

Yes, indeed - double take at the date of the thread, though! If you look in, Da Jazbo, have a great Christmas
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

"Stands the church clock at ten to three,
the Ray Charles band are all smokin' tea"

              Salute Comrade Calum.

VERY VERY best wishes for 2016,

Bluesnik and Les Mallards de Free Bop.

Bud Powell in response to "who is your favourite pianist Bud?" (long pause), "Ahhhh, Well, I do like that Buddy Powell". And don't we all.

You would take that back, Bluesie, if you were a 17-year-old kid sneaking into Birdland and have d i s t u r b e d Bud Powell look you in the eye...

I told this story to a cruise-ship (jazz) drummer and he speculated that I haven't been the same since!

The great Peter King said that he played a French jazz fest in the early 60s on the bill with Bud. When it was all over and they were going backstage, Jimmy Witherspoon, a huge Bud admirer, came up to him and said, "Bud, I've really missed you, you just played so great!" To which Bud let out a piercing scream of an intensity King said he would never ever forget.

But the cat could play. Great Danish 60's b/w short film about and with Bud avec front and back narration by Dexter Gordon. Its on Utube. Some v. interesting stuff also in the INA French audio-visual collection.
