I must confess that the music of Martial Solal is a gap in my education: I have never heard him live and very little on record. However, this might be of interest to those with an interest in the music.

At 83, Martial Solal is still one of the finest (and weirdest) jazz pianists to be seen anywhere. But, being based in France, he's just not seen often in the U.S. Watch and hear a live webcast.

I came upon this site when I was looking for some information on Lee Konitz (note the free download)

He's an octogenarian and jazz legend, but he's still going full tilt. Joined by two much younger musicians, the wonderfully unpredictable alto saxophonist performs live at the great New York venue.

There are also some excellent concerts/downloads available, some if which may be of interest to Mr Thumwood, following his comments in another thread regarding New York bands and their (non-)appearance at festivals

Thanks for the link. Looks like that my listening sorted out next week. There are plenty of names that that really appeal as well as the usual suspects such as Jason Moran. Dave Douglas, Ben Allison and Matt Wilson. J D Allen is a musician I've heard on youtube and been very impressed with. All of this seems demonstrative of just how exciting the current jazz scene is. Never heard of Amina Figorva although Wickipedia shows she is resident on the Dutch scene. Is she someone you have ever come across? I know there are several US musicians who have given up touring to Europe but the kind of groups who performed at last year' s Newport are more in keeping with the kind of stuff I would expect (or want) to see at a jazz festival. Montreux is supposed to be largely a pop festival now with the jazz marginalised to the sidelines.

      Cheers

      Ian
