    jazz dumps the graun

please feel free to send a copy of this or anything you fancy might make the point to:

    reader@thegaurdian.com

    Sir
Why has the Jazz section been removed from the on-line Guardian. Have they lost all sense of what matters in arts journalism; must they so ruthlessly pursue the mindlessness of pop and trend? I have asked the Culture team and received no answer; replies yes, answers no.
    In despair.

No warning about it, either. Does this mean that Fordham's been given the heave-ho? I hope not.

Then again Dave Gelly could write his reviews on the back of a postage stamp with the amount of space he's given in the Observer.
all words are trains for moving past what really has no name

The Guardian's Jazz webpage is still there: http://www.theguardian.com/music/jazz

      You could "Add to Favourites"?

The tab is at the foot of the Music webpage, amongst around 20 other Topics.

The dedicated jazz page has been removed from the Guardian as a consequence of the redesign of the music page, which was part of a much wider redesign of the whole website. Because the music page no longer has a navigation bar at the top of the page, it is hard for readers to find a dedicated jazz page. We kept one for classical music to see how it would fare in terms of readers visiting it, but I am afraid jazz as a genre did not attract enough readers to justify that experiment.
            Best wishes,
            Michael Hann

            Michael Hann
            Music editor, the Guardian

it was not as if they put a lot of effort in the first place, the music editor writes about pop and their pop coverage is great:
I write, commisison and edit articles about pop music.
he has moved from associate to Editor so i guess he is showing his mojo and changing things
i trust they and their twelve year old pubescent young persons enjoy the paper and each other for life ...

i know that they still write reviews of jazz cds and you can still find them if you look hard but i find the change discourteous in the extreme

however they face their own problems, in 2014

And the Guardian, down from 350,000 to 180,000, has recorded a 48% six-year loss. But that’s a small fall compared to the Independent, down from 230,000 to 63,000 – an eye-popping decrease of 72.6%.
The compensating factor for the Indy is the growth of its little sister, i, which was launched in 2010 and last month sold an average of 286,000 copies a day.
that little sister tells a tale eh?

Mr Hann has a great future at the BBC

            so now you know

You don't have to look that hard. You just click the "Jazz" Topic tab at the foot of the Music webpage.

Michael Hann's reply was exceedingly courteous, unlike your initial e-mail and general subsequent tone.

my emails to the editor were courteous, using no offensive language or personal reference of any kind, including the first [not the one above]; but i find their action objectionable and have no problem letting them know this ... there were several emails from his staff before Mr Hann made his point which showed that they did not get it ... so now we have had an answer

My sympathies are with Callum. I think it is part of the decline of "The Grauniad", which has become a much poorer newspaper over the past couple of years - still the best of a bad bunch but quite poor really.

their new website is truly dreadful; pushed through against major negative feedback from readers and professionals

have the Scott Trust and the BBC become as one in their asinine ideas and impervious decision making

i have spent a week not reading The Graun - very refreshing and i earnestly recommend the abstention; getting by on The Staggers and Huff Post is no hardship

indeed it is and Mr Hann has also kindly told me so just now, but still no navigation tab and nothing to indicate it is there

it does not matter eh, us jazbos are dying out, and in any case are not clicking enough for the marketing department at the Scott Trust

All today's stories: Pop and rock: Classical music: Grammys: Indie: Electronic music: More ...

So click on 'More', and it's after Sam Smith, Rap, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Hip-Hop, Madonna &c &c. Is that how you find it?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
