It was a fascinating programme but salutary insofar that the SME track now seemed pretty mainstream - almost the kind of jazz most contemporary bands worth their salt play these days. It goes to show how the drive for more modern styles on the programme ultimately end up seeming historic with the passage of time.

The clarinet break by Johnny Dodds on last night's track was sensational and surely one of the most thrilling pieces of jazz put on record in the 1920's. Good to hear Teddy Bunn too - shame his name has been so long forgotten.

It was a fascinating programme but salutary insofar that the SME track now seemed pretty mainstream - almost the kind of jazz most contemporary bands worth their salt play these days. It goes to show how the drive for more modern styles on the programme ultimately end up seeming historic with the passage of time.

In all fairness that was by far the most orthodox track on "Challenge", in no way representative of the album as a whole (before others start jumping to conclusions), and certainly not of what was to come with "Karyobin".

Yes but Claire Martin in on line up and Claire Teale does the radio big band.

Cerys Mathews keeps on cropping up everywhere - a bit like a female equivalent of David Mitchell. She grew up in a house where she was exposed to jazz and blues and therefore I don't think the Coltrane selection should have been too much of a surprise. Makes it all the more surprising that her own records were so shite. ( "Mulder & Scully", FFS.)

Wondered if anyone heard Annioe Lennox on Front Line promoting her latest Blue Note CD where she renders pointless versions of tunes that either need no alternative such as "Strange Fruit" or others like "Summertime" which needs to be consigned to the bin of over-played tunes - at least since Gil & Miles recorded it. Probably wins the prize as the most pointless record of 2014 even if she can sing better than Cerys Mathews. I've nothing against pop singers if they are good but Lennox is adding nothing new to this repertoire. Why doesn't Front Row interview people who are making records that are relevant. When was the last time Wayne Shorter or Dave Douglas was on that programme?

I like Cerys M as a presenter (not her musak) as she has a real enthusiasm for early blues and jazz and doesn't try to claim any massive knowledge. She prob opens a lot of her usual listeners to this area with her freshness and eagerness to learn. Unlike the God awful Annie L.

Also, she made a classic drunken S4c on-air remark about Sian Lloyd, the more Welsh than Wales weatherperson/idiot that I will always treasure. Night of the 1997 Welsh referendum results. Great.
