    Thanks Calum.

Dick Morrissey, another much missed figure of Britjazz, waiting in the wings of that Lemon aided clip there, if I'm not mistaken.

Anyone remember how good Peter Jacobsen was? That's him on electric piano in that clip.

Another much-missed pianist, Pete Saberton, once told me an amazing story about PJ. Sabbo was organising regular gigs in a north London pub, using Pete's Fender Rhodes, and in return would invite Pete along. On this particular occasion, Chris Biscoe, I think it was, nudged Sabbo, reminding him to get down the local tube station to meet PJ off the train. Arriving there rather late, he was just in time to meet a very dischevelled Pete, covered in dirt, cuts and bruises, with his blind man's stick broken. "What happened Pete?" This particular station had its platform down the middle between the up and down tracks, unusual for a deep level tube, (it might have been Angel?); anyway, Pete, not realising this, had walked off the platform and fallen onto the opposite track: amazing he had not been killed let alone injured more seriously. What did he have to say for himself, I asked Sabbo; "Oh, when I got him to the pub, the first thing he said was, "Get me a triple brandy"!

I caught Cullum's big band at Vienne this year. It was a sensational year for big band jazz with some of the best concerts being given by a number of larger ensembles. The American university bands are staggeringly good and will cover a broad range of material from early Ellington through to the likes of Maria Schneider as well as coming to the table with a lot of original material. Cullum's gig was one of the main concerts in the principle venue but his band, full of unknowns, was depressingly stiff and un-swinging. Whilst not quite as dire as Jool's Holland's notorious outfit, this band wasn't a great deal better.

As a singer, Cullum is surprisingly effective. I have a sneaking respect for him and think he is genuinely fascinated by jazz. However, he is frustrating in being so erratic as he can combine some very convincing jazz with a bucket load of superfluous nonsense as well has having the kind of stage manner that is too hectic. Part of me wants to give what he does the nod of approval but there is far too much about that makes me want to shoot him! I don't think that he is quite as bad as Calum makes out yet he has the ability to be so much better than what he is. I'd always choose Kurt Elling over anything Cullum produces and even someone like Gregory Porter has far greater gravitas.
