    Joe Sample ~ RIP

Sad to hear that another jazz luminary has passed on.

I think I saw Joe Sample at Vienne one year. For me, he was always associated with The Jazz Crusaders and the kind of jazz that bridge the gap with pop music. However, I think there was much more to his playing beyond this . Full information here:-

US musician Joe Sample, who wrote chart hits including Randy Crawford's Street Life and One Day I'll Fly Away, dies age 75.

The original JAZZ Crusaders albums for Pacific Jazz (pre Crusaders funk) are really enjoyable. OK, maybe not breaking new ground but well played kicking and sincere hard bop. Sample also recorded with the Bobby Hutcherson/Harold Land group.
