Leeds-based guitarist Chris Sharkey performs with his trio, Shiver at XOYO in London.
Known for his ferocious technique and genre-defying outlook, Chris Sharkey has made a name for himself as one of the most original players in the country, contributing to groups such as Bilbao Syndrome, TrioVD and Acoustic Ladyland. Now leading his own band Shiver, Sharkey is able to take the helm as a composer - producing music that's an ode to his distinctive guitar style, experiments with effects and range of eclectic influences. With bassist Andy Champion and drummer Joost Hendrix, the results bring together elements of futuristic rock, scorching improv and hip hop beats.

i came across these treasures on youtube, the cds are beyond hen's teeth in unavailability [there is a wonderful free software called Free You Tube Downloader ] ... they constitute one of John Lewis's major hobbies - playing and jamming on Bach; there are 4 volumes available .... this Jazbo woke up in paradise

Continuing Jazz/ Classics theme, Calum, I don't know if you tuned into CD Review this morning, about 11.05 am, where a US Conductor Andrew Litton, had actually transcribed an Oscar Peterson piece, The Nearness of You. I believe there is a CD available.

He certainly found a lot more in Oscar Peterson than I have been able to appreciate. On attempting to find the original Oscar recording on You Tube, all I could find was Oscar accompanying Dorothy Dandridge. Of all Dorothy's self-evident talents, I would not have said singing was the primary one.

I'm willing to admit that there is more to Oscar than I appreciate. What causes me to lose interest is his formula "macros" for injecting swing and funkiness into the music. May be if Oscar had played it straighter, like Art Tatum, I would have liked him more.

it's the technique i think Oddball; one or two Peterson albums tempt me [mostly in the car eg We Get Requests] - but i find it hard to engage with his music and apart from the obsessed nerd joy of doing it i was wondering quite why Litton published the exercise .... still no publicity is bad publicity for the ineffably anarchic spirit of jazz innit .....

in the news in Bolivia a jazz star emerges!

Listening now to the Chris Sharkey thing I'm wondering: is this not some kind of Thrash/Ambient crossover and not jazz at all? Listened at low volume it's interesting if exhausting with the ever-changing metre (The Rite at least offered respites) and not the totalitarian sensory-bludgeoning nausea-inducing circus ride I'd find it were I there.

... not to mention the noises a certain Mr Metheny was making back in 2000 Trio [some serious thrash in among tracks like this]:

Hmm. Perhaps in the same way some owners begin to resemble their dogs, some musicians try to live up to their names, methinky.

"Question & Answer" is a great tune and I have heard PM bring the house down with the tune on more than one occasion. I think the appeal is that it has a very Coltrane-esque vamp but the middle 8 is a nightmare as you have to play 4 notes of 3 beats - sounds easy but it is pretty tricky to get this right. This is one of his best tunes and perhaps the one which is most "in the tradition." Never been disappointed by a PM gig and have lost count of the number of times I have seen him perform with trios, quartets, solo, as a guest soloist with Daniel Humair, with the orchestrion and with a chamber orchestra. That said, the PMG is still mind-boggling fascinating.

Missed the review of Herbie's "Future 2 future" ~ I heard this band twice and found it a bit much to take in, especially as the music generated images on a huge screen via a computer. I find jazz + visuals a huge distraction and a bigger problem as the quality of the images improves to include things like still photographs.
