"This essay proposes that jazz improvisation and gift giving share many principles and practices, including spontaneity, reciprocity, excess, and risk. Jam sessions, where musicians share and explore an archive of standard chord changes, exemplify several gift practices. After further analyzing the nature and types of risk, contingency, sociability, reciprocity, and excess in both practices, the essay concludes that just as jazz exemplifies the gift, so the gift functions as a kind of social and economic jazz.
