1964 was certainly a propitious year for me as I got a prestigious engagement at the Gateway Theatre, Edinburgh, after several 'galley years' in repertory theatre. The Festival production ran for several weeks, Bridie's 'Golden Legend of Shults', which also gave me the luxury of time-off from daily rehearsals. I even persuaded our wily Manager to negotiate access for me to attend two morning rehearsals by Rostropovich and Richter of their Beethoven cello sonatas recital at the Usher Hall. A formidable task as they were not open rehearsals, probably an exclusive dozen of us in the Dress Circle. Low key and concentrated throughout. Only a couple of quiet exchanges between the artists during breaks. Nirvana. A bonus, too, after almost four decades when the evening performances were televised on BBC 4, 22 & 24 Dec 2002. An off-air video at the time but now a much prized DVD transfer.

The 1964 Festival also had a succession of daily bun-fights as visiting artists presented their credentials. A further special highlight was an intro to Marlene Dietrich after her late night show at the Lyceum. A quick dash by taxi with a colleague to get from the Gateway to the Lyceum at the end of our performance. La Dietrich then surprised us by inviting us to accompany her in a walk along Princes Street, followed by drinks at the North British. Very down to earth, no luvvie affectations and she was more interested in our work than talking about her movie career!

Also got my first TV casting in Dr Finlay's Casebook, including gorgeous location filming in The Trossachs, before the season ended. I can still do a fair impersonation of Andrew Cruickshank summoning "Janet" (Barbara Mullen)!

I wonder what they would have made of each other's music? I'm not quite convinced by Nirvana and whether Corbain was a genius. I like "Smells like teen spirit" which is a good tune, in my opinion - even if I can't understand what he was singing about.

Did Dietrich dig Eric Dolphy? Wondered what she made of the then contemporary jazz scene. Was she a regular at Ronnies, perhaps?
