Julian Joseph presents concert music by saxophonist Alex Garnett's Bunch of Fives recorded as part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the 'Jazz On A Winter's Weekend' in Southport. The line up features American saxophonist Tim Armacost as co-leader plus Liam Noble (piano), Michael Janisch (bass), James Maddren (drums) and Alex Garnett on saxophone.

Great tracks on JRR this evening, but looking at the Schedule for next week, it seems that JLU is in dire need of more friends in R3 management. Funny, I was under the impression that JLU had been moved to an early evening slot, in order to be "fair to Jazz"??

At least JRR's still there- coming (recorded) from the Gateshead International Jazz Festival. I was at SageGateshead for most of the day. Highlight for me was Jean Toussaint - lovely set.

Back again tonight for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra - In the Spirit of Duke. Looking forward to that.

Will obviously be i-playing Saturday afternoons R3 jazz output later in the week.

The club de minuit is usually a source of innovation and has in the past been where you catch the latest musicians. There was been a degree of creep with the commercial acts over the few years although the festival a couple of years back seriously reversed the trend. For me, the best element is hearing stuff you know nothing about and discovering how good it is.

Next up for me is John Abercrombie and Wynton Marsalis & LCJO playing the music of Blue Note. The latter is part of the 75th anniversary of the label which seemed to undergo a renaissance in the 1990's but this has petered out of late. It will be curious to see how much contemporary jazz makes it's way in to the celebration but I would guess it will be Horace Silver, Shorter, Mobley, etc, etc.

Scottish National Jazz Orchestra - In the Spirit of Duke.

This was a treat - sharp dressing, sharp playing, very tight ensemble under the direction of Tommy Smith with guest pianist Brian Kellock. Some blazing solos from most of the band members including Mr Smith himself.

yeh i had a cd of Basie in with Zoot where the bass sounded like that on my Sony CD Player and then i got a real cool CD deck and it sounded like a bass; actually i find the sound very boxy on iPlayer missing some crucial info i'd say .... on the cheap and non BBC engineers would be my guess ... and BTW you lacklustre twits who get it wrong or do not even bother with playlists now there is a crap automated isystem [sic] you have the name wrong on Bunch of Fives; it is Alex Garnett's Bunch, not Alex Wilson's Bunch [who he?]
