Lenny Mcbrowne Quintet....close enough for Elmo...

New discovery from me via Utube...anyone who digs Harold Land, Elmo and Curtis Counce....THAT feel, should ck/out Lenny Mcbrowne's two dates from the early 60s. "Four Souls" and "Eastern Sounds". A VERY hip band....

"When Lenny McBrowne and the 4
    Souls began gigging in Sacramento
and San Francisco clubs they were
    critically hailed as the greatest
promise for the future of West
Coast jazz. The leader had gained
    much of his experience working
    with Harold Land and playing
    engagements with Sonny Rollins,
Benny Golson and Curtis Fuller. His
    renowned finesse as a drummer
    was acquired while mastering the
subtleties of his mentor, Max Roach.
On these sessions for Riverside, he
showed he had become one of the
top drummers on the jazz scene,
    and his young musicians—average
age 25—swing hard as a unit. Terry
    Trotter, Don Sleet and Daniel
Jackson are here on top of the
demands he placed on them. But
what stands out here above all is
the rare gift of cohesion, thoroughly
    mastered by Lenny McBrowne and
    the 4 Souls."

Daniel Jackson plays great "Landish" tenor and is still around. I think.

He was playing with Charlie Haden when Ornette walked up!

There is a great little int with Daniel Jackson on Utube. Very dignified and proud guy. I think the "unsung" often make jazz for me.

Ckout the ballad "Cerise" which has Elmo Hope written all over it. I dont think he wrote it but he helped with the arrangement. Daniel Jackson went on the play with the 60s Ray Charles band. Enthuses over Ray's alto. "Flames coming out!"
