I suppose it might be because she was the first woman PM - not really a very good reason, but somehow I don't think it's that.

I haven't read all of this thread, so apologies if anyone has brought this up already.

    .
It's been mentioned but so far not commented on, Mary.

My own view is this will be a celebration of the rich, by the rich and for the rich, for Thatcher's bringing back the full-blown Adam Smith-type liberal free market economics that have made them lots and lots of lucre wherever and whenever they wanted, regardless of unsustainability and the ever-widening gap between themselves and everyone else. And that's even before we get onto the cost to the taxpayer of such a state funeral - why, after all, should they care when the consequent sacrifices will be passed down the line, as usual? .

I hope it's being planned to give her a really big send-off!

Well, former PM Sir Winston Churchill had a very special funeral, one my early memories. I'm sure others did. It's someone else's decision Mary, not yours :o

I know the Belgrano was moving west when it was hit, but in war you can be attacked when retreating.
And if the exclusion zone had recently been increased in size? It really does seem to be very convenient for Thatcher's government.

Thatcher herself did not use your argument in her wrangle (ff's word ) with Diana Gould. She used the 'Belgrano was a danger to our ships even when moving away' argument, which is pretty hard to swallow.

Of course, people can party if they wish . But it may end up as a party in the basement. With apologies/regrets to those who have contributed thoughtful posts. The basement doesn't mean that the 'partying' can't go on for as long as people want
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

You have retained the RIP bit of the title, something with which I not wish to be associated but which I am forced to endorse apparently by your action, ff - inadvertently I'm sure.

                    Could this be remedied please?

Edit: I'd be quite happy with 'Baroness Thatcher Is Dead' as a title

Strikingly Baroness Thatcher always would not allow the Treasury to attack child benefit ! Says a lot about this current shower. I suspect she would never have countenanced the attacks on the rule of law either .

I have already realised it's not my decision, John.

Who decides? The government, I suppose. Public money should not be used for this. There will have to be enormous security.

I remember Churchill's funeral all too well. I was in my first job in a city where I knew nobody, and Churchill's death took over the radio for at least two weeks. I was furious. This funeral is going to be the same, and I'm furious this time, too.

It wasn't inadvertent. Your first post retains your own title. The House Rules also say - since you have yourself quoted them - "please do not start topics or post messages which are designed to be provocative". You must know that some members - albeit a small minority - would find that title provocative.

I know that feelings run very high on this topic, but something more analytical (and critical, it goes without saying) would be welcome.
