It looks like this thread has outived any usefulness it might have had, except for a couple of posters who are using it to excercise their "wit". Could someone chuck a football into no-man's land.

Ah yes, that old chestnut again. Under the electoral system we have in this country, Lady Thatcher was victorious in three consecutive general elections, each time with a very healthy majority, the like of which today's political leaders can only dream.

And I seem to recall that in a recent referendum on abandoning the first past the post system in favour of proportional representation, that alternative was overwhelmingly rejected.

I suppose all those voters were misguided as well. Or, as you might put it- (CAPS LOCK ON):- ALL WRONG.

            Don't hold your breath, abob
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

              His oyster card, perhaps.

No, actually, on second thoughts, it's barely even cultured.

MT once had a twinset-and-pearls image, as I recall. Not much insight, though.

                Thatcher: 1979 - 43; 1983 - 144; 1987 - 102

                Blair: 1979 - 179; 2001 - 167; 2005 - 66

Blair comprehensively beat Thatcher on size of majority, length of tenure as PM, and wasn't booted out by his own party (unfortunately )

                  Do be quiet.

I would just like to know from Beef Oven how he has come to know so much about my employment history during the 1980s as to make such an assertion.

Ah yes but " Under the electoral system we have in this country" we have to pretend that Thatcher was a heroine
because that's what the script says ............. I don't know , he will be telling us we don't live in Europe next

Yes, a tragedy for those communities, and one that could have been avoided had Arthur Scargill not decided to call a strike without a ballot to further his own Marxist crusade. For him, the miners were little more than a means to an end, and he is as much to blame as anybody else for the destruction of that industry.

Scargill, whatever anybody thinks of him, told it how it was going to be. He knew what was coming.
Without him Thatcher would still have closed the mines.

I believe Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan won his last presidential election with 91.15% of the popular vote. I'm sure he would have met with Thatcher's approval.
