You don't want to have a real discussion about class. You want to wind people up on an internet message board. It's what you enjoy doing.

1: So gay people CAN get married after all .....
        and

2: It's not a word I use often or feel very strongly about so as you seem to maybe you should go first !

          1. When have I ever said I am against gay marriage? Come on, or retract what you just said.

          2. Both of us know it would be like Custer's last stand to go first on that one!!!!!!

That's doubtless because you rarely listen to what's said to you.

My impression was that people were having quite a good discussion, & then Simon threw a hissy fit (as usual) & you joined in (the discussion, not the hissy fit)

No, your impression is only about having a pop at me. It's all you can do. Just stay out of it you infantile Lord Of The Flies extra.

                  That is about it
Simon is a control freak, he wants to set the parameters of every conversation then throws his toys out of the pram if people wander "off task". I wonder if there really are any people having his "intellectual" conversations in private as he likes to tell us from time to time OR that these are more him "reasoning" with himself........ BUT mr Beef , even though you do like a bit of banter, you really don't have to join in.

                  (I guess that's a load of middle-class-pseudo-babble-nonsense as well ..........)

I really hadn't sussed that I'd stumbled into something going on with Simon. In any case, Simon's alright and there are a few bullies in here. Or people that can't get out of parent mode for a minute.

I'm not saying status is unimportant - just that it is not the same thing as class. Status defines itself relative to the stage of class society historically reached. A person leading a classless society by devolvement of power would have status conferred - lowly status, which would maybe be exemplary?

the great paradox of equality is that one must be against it, it is not what nature provides, to achieve it requires a totalitarian enforcement ... yet we cannot bear inequality and must drive it down in all conscience ... i am impressed by Popper and Berlin, we can never reconcile everything but an open [in the sense of both discourse and mobility] society where the probability of any individual living a positive and self determined life is high, and certainly higher than in Britain currently, is what i would wish for ...
To state that equality is not what nature provides is anthropomorpist - at least at its best showing up humans as wasteful in comparison with what an old romantic such as me would see as the economy with which the natural web of relationships deals with waste - or did before status outbid class in the race to mess up that balance.

nor do i lay the blame at capitalisms door; put ten humans in a room for five seconds and there will be the beginnings of a status hierarchy; yet as Boehm argues it is the more egalitarian and cooperative hunter gatherers that adapted best ...
                        Indeed!

we do have to contend with our primate nature and it would be naive anti reductionism to deny it ... but we are not prisoners of this,
Indeed not, but the organism [sic] shows remarkable tenacity confronted with cold, its own empty belly, and being sidelined. The problem with such forced tenacity is that the forced losing sight of the bigger picture fall back on basic survival instincts.

In case you aint noticed, some of them in here are having a decent intellectual exchange. They're talking about 'power' but they don't know it.

So slow down, and hold your neurotic tendencies in check.

If they don't know it, how can they be said to be contributing to "a decent intellectual exchange"? In any case, I'm not sure that you would know, since you have yet to contribute anything constructive to such an exchange.

That's a "note to self" on your part, I take it? If so, I say once again that you don't often listen to what people say to you, even when you're talking to yourself.
