I've been fiddling around with new arrangements for 'Diversions' and hope to refine to a point where threads can only be seen if you are a logged in member. This is a ploy to multiply the number of new members who all want to be able to enjoy the punch-ups...

This might be a good place to sound out on a new idea I have where some closed threads are stored in the sub-basement stacks. Access on application

I don't like to remove any threads totally or any posts that I may delete. I think all threads should be available for members to consult (this is particularly true if they are critical of me or moderatorial decisions that I take); so everything will be accessible. But in some cases, I think they could bring the forum into disrepute if they remain on public view and googlable.

Never. I always try to support small businesses - it's not always possible, but I feel we need to maintain local shops.

Then remember, when your local bookshop and/or record shop shuts down, that the big business monopolies that dominate the global economy operate co-operatively as a class to out-compete the "little man". The consumer acts as in essence an individual against all that power, yet is told that this is the great virtue of capitalism, your freedom to choose. Publicity operates to convince you to the contrary, talking in terms of "individual empowerment" and all other such ontological nonsense to maintain envy and the "keeping up with the Joneses" which is the system's underpinning drive.

The profit available to independent booksellers is not particularly great these days and this is made worse by the 'discounts' offered by outfits like Amazon.

However I am reliably informed that the profit available to independent booksellers on greetings cards and wrapping paper is substantial

So ... buy your books on Amazon (and perhaps bolster the fortunes of Royal Mail) and spend the money you've 'saved' on greetings cards and wrapping paper at your local indie bookshop
