And a very shrewd strategy during the recession: since 2008, 3 Waitroses of various sizes have opened within easy striking distance of Château Caliban, where until then there had been none... and they opened on the sites of a Woolworths, a Budgens and a Shell (petrol station) shop - all three failed and/or depressing. Now all are booming.

Every waitrose I go in is cluttered up with the middle aged retired drinking free cups of coffee and using the free wifi.

Mind you , I only pop in in if I'm feeling thirsty or the 4 g signal locally is a bit dodgy...
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Well I go in for the free coffee and Grauniad (there is always a sufficient supply of worthwhile promotional offers to make up the £5 spend needed to gain the Grauniad) but I had not noted that they offered free wifi. I must pop in to register the Windows 8.1 and get updates for my newly acquired Tesco Connect 7" tablet (£59). It's strange animal. There is no manual provided either with it or online, and so far I have been unable to get through to their free telephone helpline to ask how and when they intend to provide a manual.

For those in need of free wifi while they slurp their free lattecino, the free wifi is part of the o2 free wifi network, which is pretty handy when you are out and about and need to connect with the real world.

Other prestigious outlets offering this service include Subway and first bus.
Please dont ask why I know this.

Good luck with the tesco tablet Bryn. Sounds a tricky one.

Especially as they were always late.

On the up side, I know the menu at subway offf by heart, and what the specials are each day without checking.

                      Oh do join in chaps.
The whole world is running on free waitrose coffee.

You have to apply for a my waitrose card online. Even I have one on my key ring, which I tend to think makes me look terribly swish when, er, brandishing my keyring.

( and I know about the free wifi because my broadband was out for 4 days, so I trawled the south of england looking for free connections and picking up a coffee where I could.)

Pm me if you want to know of a good Hotspot.

This is the beast. Looks like it might have gone back up to £99 now though.
