    Well said, Pabs.

Note that in the Mail's account the youths are Asian but our fallen hero is not white Caucasian
    .

I hardly think that in describing the young men as Asian the Mail is seeking to aid the police in apprehending them Instead it is seeking to drive a wedge between two communities, both of whom no doubt might see themselves as hard done by but only one of which has the support of the Mail.

Perhaps messages from about no. 40 should be merged with the 'Poppy thread' in 'Politics'? They seem to have more in common with the tone of that thread than with the initial posts on this one.

HeHe, yes you are right. I should say that many of today's yoof agree with MrGG!

Yes, that would help. It's the usual format in this forum. Anything even vaguely patriotic, and all the low self-esteemers come in to derail it and get it consigned to the dungeon!!! Lol!!

But can I make a special plea to keep post #45 in the thread? Seems to be entirely in keeping with the spirit of the OP.

I wasn't thinking about patriotism, and I don't think that Remembrance Sunday is, or should be, about that dubious emotion. I just thought that there is another thread devoted to discussion about the idea of Remembrance Sunday & the Poppy industry that surrounds it, & that this thread should remain a space where people could comment on how they marked the occasion. Of course, I think it perfectly possible that BO started it in the expectation, if not hope, that it would morh into the former type of discussion

The point is that it's not

innocuous things like the ritual of Remembrance Sunday.
                  it's NOT an "innocuous" thing
It was made to convey a particular message which many find objectionable

Hmm. I think you're reading too much into it.

Remembrance Sunday is simply a commemoration for the service men and women of the Commonwealth who served during the two world wars, and particularly those that lost their lives. It is a highly popular event each year, with all aspects of British society participating in it, to greater or lesser degrees. From members of the government, through the Football Association, the BBC and schools and colleges, the general public etc etc.

Whilst it is indeed highly popular, a few (or 'many' to those of low self-esteem or chronic narcissism) wish to communicate their objection to.

                    It's here to stay.

Perfectly possible, but I can confirm that it is not true.

My preference would be for a simple, respectful acknowledgement of this highly popular occasion, the exchange of pleasantries and some judicious, respectful discussion.

I doubt it's very popular amongst gay men because of the dreadful attitude shown by The British Legion towards a group of gay servicemen who wished to lay a triangular wreath of pink carnations to commemorate their friends who served & died.

My old chum Dudley Cave was one of those and you can read about his struggle to pull the BL into the 20th century in this obituary written by Peter Tatchell.

ANTI-FASCIST, SOLDIER, prisoner of war, advocate of peace and reconciliation, gay rights pioneer, Dudley Cave was above all a humanitarian.

Dudley probably falls into BO's category of chronic narcissism. Dudley would have known how to deal with such silly offence.

It used to be like this
but you seem not to have noticed that it's expanded to include all sorts of other conflicts

What about all those Polish airmen who fought alongside the RAF? Don't we commemorate their sacrifice?

And what about all the civilians who were killed, are still being killed, in wars all over the world?

Ignore all that, it's a distraction.

I may be dense but I can find neither the 'Poppy thread' nor 'Politics'. May we have a link?
