    H&N Saturday Jan 18th

Anyone catch this and that piece by Haas? All done in the dark apparently. We were supposed to listen in the dark too - I didn't. Anyway my question is: what did people think of it. I struggle with this type of music. At first it seemed as if it had potential with some interesting sonorities and effects but after a while it all started sounding as if it had nowhere to go and just rambled. What was I missing? My concentration went and I did not enjoy it to the end. If it had been a lot shorter? Have to take my hat off the the LSinfonietta though.

The Ligeti was much better but still a challenge to get into.

Not quite - the lights go down twice at different points in the performance. One of his string quartets, on the other hand, is indeed performed in darkness throughout. I don't know what you mean by "this type of music" but I agree that Haas's piece is somewhat disappointing compared with the hype that has come to surround it.

I listened to it in bed, from my clock radio, which may have been optimum conditions, as I was deeply relaxed, and not intentionally concentrating on the music, but just letting the music take me somewhere. It certainly did. Will have to listen again on iPlayer.

Unfortunately dropped off to sleep before the Ligeti. I have just played it but will have to listen once more. I'm sure I have it on CD somewhere. That's it - Clear or Cloudy - DG - 4CD Set.

Just in case anybody is searching for it, the Ligeti begins at 1 hour 13 mins, not 1 hour 23.

edit, and for some reason it won't "pause".
but otherwise........ a great listen !!
